Sodalite: The Stone That Makes You Tell the Truth

Sodalite: The Stone That Makes You Tell the Truth

Every month I pick a stone for the shop, and most months I think I'm picking it. Sodalite picked itself this time. It kept ending up in my hand.

It's a deep blue stone streaked with white, and people almost always mistake it for lapis. Easy mistake. The difference is what's running through it. Lapis carries flecks of gold pyrite. Sodalite carries veins of white calcite, like a storm cloud with light breaking through it. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The name comes from its sodium content, which is not romantic at all, and I love that about it. Some of the most powerful stones in my shop have the least glamorous origin stories.

What sodalite is for

Sodalite is a throat and third eye stone. In plain language: it helps you hear what's actually true, and then say it out loud without twelve layers of apology wrapped around it.

If you are a person who thinks in circles, this is your stone. If you replay conversations at midnight, if you write and rewrite a text message before you send it, if you say yes with your mouth while your whole body says no — sodalite has something for you.

What I notice with it, in myself and in the people I sit with, is that it quiets the commentary. Not the feelings. Feelings are supposed to move. It quiets the story we stack on top of the feelings — the running analysis that keeps us stuck in our heads and out of our bodies.

There's a reason it's sometimes called a writer's stone. It sits right at the hinge where knowing becomes saying.

Who I hand it to

Healers who talk themselves out of what they already know. Every single time.

The person who apologizes before they share an opinion. The one who over-explains a boundary until it stops being a boundary. The one who felt something clearly in their gut on Tuesday and by Thursday had reasoned their way out of it entirely.

Sodalite doesn't give you new information. You already had the information. It helps you stop arguing with it.

How to work with it

  • Carry a tumbled piece in your pocket on any day you know a hard conversation is coming. Hold it in the parking lot before you go in.
  • Rest a piece at your throat while you lie down and let your breath slow. If you feel your jaw unclench, that's the work.
  • Keep one next to your journal. Write the sentence you don't want to write. That's usually the true one.
  • Set it on your desk if your work is words — whether that's writing, teaching, selling, or telling someone what you actually charge.
  • Hold it while you sort one drawer. Ask each item what it's really doing for you. Sodalite doesn't make the answer easier. It makes it clearer, which is often the part we were avoiding.

Caring for your sodalite

It sits around 5.5 to 6 on the hardness scale, which means it's softer than quartz and it will scratch if you toss it in a bag with your keys. Give it its own pouch.

Don't soak it. Extended water and salt water are not its friends, and a long soak can dull that beautiful surface. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth instead.

To cleanse it, use sage, moonlight, sound, or set it on a selenite plate overnight. Any of those work beautifully and none of them will hurt the stone.

Come find yours

We have sodalite in tumbles, points, and a few pieces of jewelry this month, and no two of them look alike. Come hold a handful and see which one warms up in your palm. That one's yours. It's always that simple, and people are always surprised that it's that simple.

Where Energy Flows.
